LONGCASE,SAMUEL CLAY,GAINSBOROUGH
| Product Code: 056 | | Description: |
The clock stands 6ft 83/4ins high. It has 7 day movement.
The hands appear to be original; these were broken but with difficulty have been repaired. The clock face has been restored and the chapter ring re-silvered. The clockwork mechanism has been cleaned and overhauled. The case has been restored. The clock case was possibly carved in the Victorian Period.
Samuel Clay is recorded in “Clockmakers of the World” as making clocks in Gainsborough in 1720. The method in which the hole has been punched in the cast brass is consistent with this date.
Samuel Clay appears to be the start of a long line of clockmakers in Gainsborough. There is a record of a Charles Clay born in 1762 in Gainsborough making clocks and watches, possibly a grandson. Also a Charles Clay born in 1811 in Gainsborough who made clocks in Messingham in 1906, a Samuel William Clay born around 1817, brother of Charles and subsequently his son who continued making clocks in Gainsborough.
